By road, the trip from Delhi to Jaisalmer takes 13.5 hours and is 761 km. Before reaching Jaisalmer, the most popular route is via NH11 which passes through Rohtak, Bhiwani, Bikaner and Pokhran. The road is smooth as it is in good condition. As you pass through Haryana and Rajasthan, the scenery changes from urban to open fields and then to the golden sands of the desert.

An alternate route is via NH 754K and NH11 which is 790 km in roughly 14 hours. Before joining NH11 near Shri Dungargarh, this route takes a different route through Gurugram, Narnaul, Mandawa and Ratangarh. Both routes combine traditional Rajasthani landscapes with modern highways. The best way to enjoy the long journey is to make stops at strategic points where you can see forts, try local cuisine and learn about Rajasthani culture. Before you reach the beautiful city of Jaisalmer, the journey gives you a glimpse of the history and grandeur of the desert state.

A long drive is more fun when you take the right breaks. The first good break after Delhi is Rohtak which is about 70 km away. It’s a good place for breakfast with many dhabas serving fresh parathas and chai. If you want to take a quick break before continuing your journey, this is the place to stop.

Further ahead, Bikaner is a popular place to stop. It’s famous for Junagarh Fort which stands tall with its grand palaces and courtyards. The city is also famous for its food especially Bikaneri bhujia and Rajasthani sweets. Many travellers stop here for a traditional thali before continuing their journey.

As you move ahead, Pokhran is another good stop. Pokhran Fort and local markets selling handcrafted Rajasthani items make it a good place to take a break. From here the road to Jaisalmer goes through open desert landscapes. The last stretch before Jaisalmer is a sight to behold with golden sands on both sides of the road and small dhabas on the way.

Day 1: Departure from Delhi and Arrival in Jaisalmer

The 761 km journey from Delhi to Jaisalmer starts early in the morning. You can visit Junagarh Fort or try Bikaneri Bhujia at Bikaner, the first big stop. After that the road takes you to Pokhran, famous for its nuclear test site and historic fort. Check into a hotel or desert camp when you reach Jaisalmer in the evening. You can have dinner which includes traditional Rajasthani food like Dal Baati Churma and Laal Maas with marking the end of the day.

Day 2: Exploring Jaisalmer’s Forts and Havelis

Visit Jaisalmer Fort first thing in the morning. This is one of the few forts where people still live. Explore the intricately carved Patwon Ki Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli inside. After visiting the Jain Temples inside the fort take a leisurely boat ride around Gadisar Lake. Day 3: Local Sightseeing and Back to Delhi

Starts the last day with a visit to Kuldhara, which is an abandoned village with a mysterious past. Then visit Bada Bagh, a place with beautiful views and royal cenotaphs. See the Tanot Mata Temple, historically significant because of its connection with Indo-Pak war. After lunch start your drive back to Delhi, with stops at dhabas en route. The trip ends late in the night or early next morning.

Jaisalmer has a desert climate so October to March is the best time to visit when the weather is pleasant. During this time the day temperature is between 10°C to 27 °C, perfect for sightseeing. December to February is the peak season, as many tourists come for the Jaisalmer Desert Festival in February. This festival has camel races, folk performances, and traditional Rajasthani cuisine.

Summers from April to June are extremely hot with temperatures above 45°C and not suitable for outdoor sightseeing. Monsoons from July to September bring very little rainfall but don’t bring down the temperature much. If you are visiting in winter, do carry warm clothes as nights can be cold. Early mornings and evenings in the desert are breathtaking, especially at Sam Sand Dunes, where the golden sands reflect the changing colours of the sky.

Kuldhara Village- One of the most famous abandoned villages in India is just 18 km from Sand dunes of Jaisalmer. About 200 years ago, Paliwal Brahmins used to live there till they vanished overnight. The place is famous for ruins telling a story of past.

Tanot Mata Temple- Situated near the Indo-Pak border, it is approx 122 km from Jaisalmer city and takes 2-3 hours to reach. After enemy bombs failed to explode near the temple during the 1965 and 1971 wars, it gained importance. Border Security Force (BSF) is in charge of the site and visitors can stop by the 40 km away Longewala War Memorial which depicts the events of the 1971 war.

Desert National Park- If you are a wildlife lover then this wildlife sanctuary is a great place to visit. Spread over 3,162 sq km, it is home to endangered species like the monitor lizard, desert fox and Great Indian Bustard. A jeep safari is the best way to see this region as it gives you a close look at the desert ecology.

Ramdevra Temple- Located 118 km away from Jaisalmer is the Ramdevra Temple which is dedicated to Baba Ramdev, a local deity worshipped by people of all religions. It is a major pilgrimage site especially during the Ramdeva Fair which attracts a large number of devotees every year.
